About Public Interest
Public Interest is an independent media organisation from Aotearoa New Zealand dedicated to making sense of the world in an age of political uncertainty.
We produce clear, accessible analysis of politics, economics and culture, grounded in a commitment to democratic, egalitarian change. That means looking past the day-to-day churn of the news cycle to examine how power actually works in this country – who has it, how they use it, and who misses out.
Through interviews, panel discussions and original reporting, we bring together journalists, thinkers, organisers and activists to take on the big issues – from the price of milk to the rise of AI, from leaking pipes to the decline of democracy.
Public Interest provides a uniquely New Zealand view on current affairs: informed by global currents but grounded in the specific conditions and history of this place. We aim to be rigorous without being academic, political without being sectarian.
Public Interest is produced by a team of volunteer journalists, researchers and screen industry workers based across the country. Our work is entirely audience-funded. If you value it, consider supporting us.
