We spend a lot of time at Public Interest talking to people who know what they’re talking about. So we thought it was time to try something different.

Today, we're pleased to announce the launch of a new show called The State of It featuring comedian Guy Williams and researcher Avigail Allan.

Call it a podcast within a podcast, or Public Interest's very first spinoff, The State of It is designed for those days when you want a dose of politics but aren't quite ready for another two hour session on the Public Finance Act.

Join Guy and Avi as they sit down and unpack a recent episode of Public Interest. Their mission? To try make sense of it all, dream up solutions to the country's pressing problems, and bravely head where our distinguished experts dare not tread.

In the first episode, Guy and Avi explore the state of crime and punishment: why does New Zealand lock up so many people? Why do politicians keep promising to get tougher on crime?  And what does a Melbourne Cup horse syndicate have to do with it?

Watch the full conversation below and subscribe to Public Interest for more discussions making sense of politics and power in Aotearoa.
